Sioux Falls rapper Gabriel Night Shield's single "Anything You Want" is nominated for Best Hip-Hop/R&B Recording by the eighth Native American Music Awards.
Another South Dakotan, Maniac The Siouxpernatural, also known as Troy Eagle Chasing from the Cheyenne River Reservation, earned a Nammy nomination in the same category for his March 2005 debut album "Nightmerika."
"I'm excited because we were selected out of 150 who were considered," Night Shield said of one of the highest honors in Native American music.
The Rosebud native said he gives credit to Sioux Falls singer Tyshawn, who sings the chorus between Night Shield's rapping on the single.
"I wrote the rap, he wrote the chorus," Night Shield said.
Night Shield and Maniac, 21, plan to attend the awards ceremony June 8 at the Seminole HardRock Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
Past Nammy winners from South Dakota include blues musicians from Marty Indigenous, who won in 2001, and Brule, a contemporary group from Lower Brule in central South Dakota. Brule won two Nammys in 2002.
Night Shield manages Maniac on his Night Shield Entertainment record label.
The nominated music was recorded in Pulse River Studios in Viborg, but he has since switched to Cat House Studios in Sioux Falls.
The Sioux Falls rapper was featured earlier this year on the South Dakota Public Broadcasting-produced "Dakota Life" TV show.
Night Shield will perform with DJ Cam after 9 p.m. Friday at The Derby Bar in Valentine, Neb.
On a national level, Night Shield and Maniac The Siouxpernatural will be joining fellow Native Hip-Hop All-Stars on the national CIB (Certificate Of Indian Blood) Tour next week in Arizona and New Mexico
