Refugees to arrive in Gallup NM
I just received a call from a teacher at Rocky View whose husband works with the American Red Cross here in Gallup. There will be approximately 75 refugee families, from Louisiana and the other areas hit by Hurricane Katrina, who will be relocated temporarily here to Gallup. They will be housed at Kamp Kiwanis. The director at Kamp Kiwanis said they are currently on standby, they do not know when families will begin arriving.
They are in need of the following: towels, washcloths, twin bedding, pillows, blankets, non-perishable food items, snack food items, games for kids, and school supplies (although our schools can supply some of these). There will probably be a need for clothing in the future, although they are not taking these donations currently.
Donations can be dropped off at Kamp Kiwanis, which is located south of Gallup. The phone numbers are 778-5142 or 778-5764 if you want to arrange a drop-off. I am sure there will be other drop-off spots in town as well. The local Red Cross office is located at the Larry Brian Mitchell Rec Center (I think!); the number is 726-1708.
Please feel free to forward this information to others in the Gallup area. If you need more information contact the local Red Cross or Kamp
Kiwanis.
Also, on a side note, the Rocky View school community will be continuing our "Change for Charity" fundraising drive through this Friday. A lot of us are not able to send a check for $100 or $50, or even $10 to help out, but many of us have some spare change or a dollar, that we can give, and all of us together can make a difference. We have a donation jar set up in the Rocky View office for the purpose of collecting spare change to donate to the Red Cross and to Teach for America (which has three sites in the affected regions and several displaced TFA teachers), so if you are out toward the east end of town and have time to stop in and empty your pockets or purse of those pennies, nickels, dimes, or quarters, please come on by!
