Subject: Help for Son in Service
Well, here we go again folks.... I will enclose my original letter to the Post Commander at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Three Senator's are getting involved along with our attorney and a friend Dave Hoover who works with Native American Veterans. Our attorney called this afternoon and is working so hard they are out of money and want another check. He spoke to Senator Murray's office and they feel that this is the best course of action to stop the Article 15.
This has to be done right now, so please do it as soon as possible. If you have access to any Native American Groups anywhere, please send this on.
Senator Patty Murray is going to go Fort Lewis herself and she would like to have as many E-mails as possible sent to her office so that she can collect them.
Please address the issue of discrimination toward our son, the horrible way that his Native American "Spiritual Items" were dishonored during the search and for those who personally know our son, a small statement relating to his character would not hurt.
If you do not have the capacity to fax this to her office, but have E-mail go to
murray.senate.gov/contact/
Please blind copy or cc me in so that I can keep a file. If you need to fax a hand written letter and do not have access, get it to me personally and I will see that it is faxed or if you want to have me fax your e-mail...I will also do that for you.
The Honorable Senator Patty Murray, Seattle, Washington
Fax: (206) 553-0891
For your information: original letters: to Blasdel Honorable Chuck Blasdel,
We live in East Liverpool, Oh and have a 19 year old son, Charles Guy Stoddard, serving in the United States Army.
I am retired and 62 years old, my wife is 57. Since I am retired, my son entered the service to obtain their training and college funds. I served in the United States Army from 1966 thru 1969 and achieved the rank of SSG E-6, serving in France, Germany and Viet Nam. I was able to finish my college on the GI Bill which motivated Charles to do the same. Charles wants to be a doctor, not for the money, but to help people and is presently serving as a line Combat Medic with the 2nd Armored Cavalry who are training in Fort Lewis, Washington.
Charles is a good boy who enjoys what he is doing and is dedicated to being the best Medic that he can be so that he can bring home as many of the wounded as he can instead of taking other lives in a combat situation. He was never gotten into trouble, never smoked, drank or used drugs. He participated in the East Liverpool Choir and ran track in his senior year.
After returning to Ft Lewis after a 10 day leave, his entire barracks was given a urine test on August 16, 2005 which he passed. While they were being held at another location after the urine test, the CID with dog teams searched their building. The dogs found nothing.
We are of Native American descent. Charles had a "warrior medicine bundle" with him in a cedar box - it contained our 4 sacred herbs: white sage, tobacco, sweet grass and cedar, a clam shell to be used as a smudge pot and a turkey feather that had been given to him by another native person. This person also gave him a small packet of blue corn meal - something to be used in special times of need to sprinkle as a perimeter of protection. His belongings were thrown on the floor without regard to their spiritual value and are tantamount to someone coming into your house and throwing your Bible on the floor. The CID team not knowing what the blue corn meal flour was decided that it was drugs and said that it failed a "field test".
The blue corn meal was in the original package ( a very small zip lock bag that could have contained a set of ear rings for example) which he had received from the individual and never used. The person who gifted it to him has been contacted and took their remaining blue corn meal to their personal lawyer who turned it over to the police for testing. This person was gifted it by another person so they did not obtain the blue corn and grind it their self. We do not have the results of that test yet.
The CID hand cuffed the boy and took him out in front of his unit. They grilled Charles for 4 hours before his platoon sergeant was able to get him released. They said that the blue corn meal tested positive for traces of meth anphamine (I don't even know how to spell it nor does the computer). He was never charged.
Yesterday, he went back to take a lie detector test (which he insisted upon doing) and they said he failed it because he is so scared. They tried for another 6 hours of grilling to get him to confess that he knew that he had this drug in his possession. The CID implied that if he confessed he might get a lesser charge, but neither he nor we as his parents want him to confess to anything that he did not do. If they really had something on the boy they would have charged him rather than invest over 10 hours of trying to get a confession. Their report was ridiculous. In their search they found that a person had 2 blue bandannas so he is a gang member, someone had black nail polish so they took it (they were suppose to have black nail polish to repair their metal rank markings incase they became chipped),another person had a band jacket with an insignia on it and so they were gang related also.
His platoon sergeant is willing to state in person or in writing that he was present when the dogs searched the room and the dogs found nothing. I have heard that the drug is bad and has a particular odor that can not even be disguised by putting it around gasoline. I really do not know.
We are trying to find him a criminal lawyer in the Seattle, Washington area. I talked to a national attorney last night and she wanted $40,000 up front to take the case...we do not have that kind of money.
The boy is proud of the training that he has received as a Combat Medic, he wants to continue in the Army and is scared that this will ruin his chance for an education.
Is there anything that you can do to help or do you know someone to direct us to.
Thank you for your attention in this matter. Please get back to us ASAP
Sincerely,
George Gary Stoddard and Beverly A. Stoddard

Dear Sir,
My name is Beverly Stoddard, AKA, Chief Red Hawk. My son, Charles G. Stoddard is currently serving his country in your Army and is attached to the 3rd SQD, 2CR, Building 3278, Room 306.
You may not be the person to whom I should address my concerns but someone needs to listen before a very good young man is railroaded out of his life. I pray that you will give my words your utmost consideration and I respectfully ask for your help.
Charles is 18 years old and has practiced his Native Culture for most of his life. He is also a born again Christian and highly respected for his spirituality in the circles that we walk in. As a people we do not believe in the use of drugs or alcohol and hold a zero tolerance for it among our people. Charles has strictly abided by this all of his life.
Charles aspirations are to serve his country and to bring home as many soldiers alive and well as he and God are able to bring off of the field of battle. After that he would like to be a doctor and serve his people.
It has long been a custom and tradition among our people to gift those that you hold in high esteem or honor to make sure that they have the things they need. 'Sometimes you will be gifted things by people that you have just met and you do not really know that person. These gifts do not necessarily remain with you as you will often gift them on to another as you see or feel the need to do so.
In Charles case, he was honored at several POW WOWS or gatherings by the Native American people for being a warrior and enlisting to serve his country. One of the things that he was gifted is something that we call a "warriors bundle". We do not profess to know where everything came from that was in it, but one item in question was a small package of blue corn meal that according to our customs would be used to be a barrier against evil or bad spirits.
Now here is the problem: on the 16th of the month after coming back to post from leave, he was (with others in the barracks) gotten up early in the morning and given a urine test which he passed. As information, he has always passed every test given to him in the service. A few hours later the CID came in and did a drug search on his entire barracks while they soldiers were held in a location apart from their belongings. The dogs did not come up with anything, however the people involved did find his Cedar box that had in it his prayer smudge bowl, feather and the sacred medicines that we use for prayer and the package of unmarked blue corn meal. All of these items were dumped out on the floor and isrespected. He was told that the CID had done a field test on the corn meal and that it had come up positive for a Crystal Meth. He was taken in hand cuffs to CID Headquarters and questioned for 4 hours. They wanted him to admit that he knew that it had meth in it. My son had no reasonable expectation to think that there was anything in that bag but blue corn meal!!!
However, no one in CID wants to believe that. Charles asked for a lie detector test to prove his innocence and was told that he didn't need that because it wouldn't hold up in court anyway. After 4 hours he was released back to his company with suspicions of possession hanging over his head. He had refused a lawyer due to his feelings that because of his innocence he did not need one.
On the 23rd of August, he was told to report to the CID for a lie detector test that he had requested. Again he did not think that he needed a lawyer because of his innocence. For what ever the reason, they told him that he did fail the lie detector test and he felt that he has let down his unit. I have raised him to always tell the truth and to stand on it because it is always better in the end, so he would not confess to doing anything wrong.
The person in CID that handled the test talked to him for 6 hours telling him that he was obviously lying and needed to admit it so that they could pled the charges down to something less and it would all be over. During this time he asked to be allowed to call his sergeant or his mother and was refused the right to do so. He was told that it would be counter productive to their investigation. He adamantly refused to admit to something that he did not do. The CID person told him that this was his only opportunity to confess or he had the right to walk out and he would get in a lot of trouble.
When Charles was allowed to call his father and I told him to admit to nothing but the truth and to walk out. We spent the evening trying to build his sprits back up and looking into getting him a lawyer which it looks very much like he is going to need. It appears that the Army believes that you are guilty until proven innocent.
This young man would try to lead you to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ rather than to lead you into using any type of drug.
The people in his nation and the Native people that know him are writing to their Congressmen and Senators to obtain help in this matter. Since I personally contacted the Deputy Adjutant General's Office and asked for helpfor him and nothing was done, we need to seek help elsewhere. We do not know how to get someone to listen.
I pray that you are a fair and honest man and will respond to the prayers of a very concerned mother for her baby son. Please do not let this atrocity go on any further before someone one will listen to the truth.
For your information, the corn meal that the CID has for testing was only a very small portion of the amount that the individual received before giving it to my son. The larger portion has been sent to the police for testing and we should have the results of their test in the near future. I thank you for the time and effort that you have or will put into this and I will continue to keep the entire Fort, its men and you covered in
prayers.
Sincerely,

Dear Sir,
I am writing to you on behalf of my only son, Pvt. Charles G. Stoddard, who is assigned to your 3rd SQD, 2CR as a line Combat Medic.
We contacted the Adjutant General's Office on Aug 16th who promised to contact us by telephone or by E-mail. They have failed to do this.
In the Native American Communities, we honor both past and present warriors who serve their country. After bringing in the flags at a Pow Wow, the 1st thing that we do is honor all service men and women who are presently serving or have served their country.
Native Americans are a loving people that are very family orientated. Many times at our gathering the veterans and those that are presently serving are gifted freely from the heart of the people. It is not uncommon for people to even take off a piece of jewelry that they are wearing and pass it to a service man and say that they will pray for them.
My son was gifted a "warrior's medicine bundle" by an individual out of the kindness of their heart and concern for his safety in the military. Included in this bundle was the "blue corn meal" that is in question. It was a gift from another individual that was simply passed on to him. My son had no idea that it could have contained a foreign substance, if he had, it would have been rejected by him. Our nation (Munsee Delaware Nation, USA has a zero tolerance policy toward drugs and alcohol.
Native Americans have always responded well to the defense of the United States. As a reminder I would quote briefly from former Attorney General Ashcroft ...
"Remarks of Attorney General John Ashcroft

Good morning. This morning we come together to
recognize the many contributions of Native Americans
to the Department of Justice and to our country. At a
time when all Americans are being asked to rise to the
defense of our country and its values, the First
Americans are among the most dedicated and patriotic citizens of our nation."
Having been in the service I pray daily for our service men, including every time I eat as I thankfully pray for my food that the Creator has provided.
I will enclose a copy of my E-mail to my Senator for your information, but it is not stopping there. I have written to the Armed Forces Committee and this is going to go on the internet to many Native American Groups. How will the parents of Native Americans feel? Will they want the rights of their children violated? Will this have an impact upon the percentage of Native Americans who volunteer to serve their country? Will the Native American Community stand by quietly, I do not believe so!
I would only ask that you give my son the fair consideration that he is due and to instruct you entire staff including the CID to properly give respect to another person's religious articles instead of throwing them on the floor.
I have also enclosed a written letter from my wife for your consideration and information.
Thank you for attention in this matter.
